STEAM and its predecessor STEM are considered essential to 21st century education. According to the U.S. Department of Education, “In an ever-changing, increasingly complex world, it’s more important than ever that our nation’s youth are prepared to bring knowledge and skills to solve problems, make sense of information, and know how to gather and evaluate evidence to make decisions.” Enhancing such skills lies at the heart of STEM and STEAM education. Students should be able to wonder, inquire, analyze and innovate. Spanish-speaking students and other underrepresented minorities have not traditionally had access to this type of education.
